Our in-house R&D capability is central to our overall strategic approach. At BioFilm, we want to partner our clients at the earliest possible stage in the development of their products. We regularly initiate new ideas for products and will often take a partner’s concept and develop this into a novel prototype. Having a dedicated in-house research & development team means we can tailor-make and engineer precise film characteristics from the start to meet stringent individual requirements, whether it be a slow release medical film or a fast dissolving flavour carrier. The Design ProcessWe work with our partners to ensure that the design of all projects in the product pipeline exactly meets the specification laid down at the outset. An integral part of our approach is to give clients the assurance that all aspects of the design have been examined, that they comply with the latest legislation and that intellectual property rights have also been considered.

One of BioFilm’s particular claims to fame is our knowledge of film forming processes which, we believe, currently rivals any to be found in the world. Our superior film forming knowledge is illustrated by the fact that most of our larger competitors use only a limited number of film formers compared to ourselves.

PectinA purified carbohydrate obtained primarily from citrus fruits and apples. Pectin films have a good capacity to carry actives and are particularly suitable for low pH applications and ideal for consumer medical devices. Solubility can be adjusted by varying the molecular weight of the polymer, but generally pectins dissolve slowly which aids controlled release and topical applications.

BioFilm has the capability to scale up rapidly from laboratory to small scale production and then to full commercial scale. During this process, conditions are fully optimised to ensure efficient processing and this is achieved through the use of statistical process control. |

We understand that clients are concerned about protecting their intellectual property as much as we are at BioFilm. Therefore, our strategy for protecting intellectual property and know-how is, where possible, to secure application-specific patents which combine the technology with the particular application. This is just one of the benefits we have of working in close partnership with our clients. |
